PISCATAWAY, N.J. (May 14, 2022) – The No. 22 Rutgers baseball team dominated Bowling Green on Saturday, using a gem from Nate Florence on the mound and four home runs by the offense to win 21-1 on senior day. After the game, the program honored 15 graduating seniors inside of the Fred Hill Complex.Â
While Saturday was originally scheduled to be a doubleheader, the second game was canceled due to rain. The Scarlet Knights will take a two-game sweep over the Falcons after winning 12-5 on Friday afternoon.Â
Senior Nate Florence got the start for Rutgers and set the tone early, striking out two Falcons in the first inning. The RU offense got to work early, with
Ryan Lasko leading off with a walk to get on base.
Danny DiGeorgio singled him to third before
Nick Cimillo scored him on an RBI single. DiGeorgio then scored on a balk while Cimillo scored on an RBI groundout by
Evan Sleight.Â
Florence continued to dominate, retiring the first 10 Bowling Green batters he faced with seven strikeouts. He would finish with 5.0 near-perfect innings, allowing just one baserunner on a single. He struck out 10 batters, a Rutgers-best for him, allowed no runs and walked none to earn the win and improve to 6-2.Â
Tony Santa Maria hit a solo home run in the fourth to make it 4-0. In the fifth, Lasko and DiGeorgio hit back-to-back doubles before
Chris Brito launched a 2-run home run to make it 7-0.
Jordan Sweeney then homered for the second straight game in the sixth.Â
The Scarlet Knights would hang a 10-spot in the seventh, sending 11 batters to the plate before the first out of the inning was recorded.
Mike Nyisztor,
Josh Kuroda-Grauer and
Richie Schiekofer all hit RBI singles to push the score to 13-1.
Danny DiGeorgio then demolished a no-doubt grand slam to make it 17-1.
Cameron Love and
Bradley Norton each drove in a run to make it 19-1, while Nysiztor delivered the final blow in a 2-run double in the eighth.Â
Ben Gorski pitched 2.0 innings in relief for Florence, giving up the lone run.
Parker Scott finished the game with 2.0 scoreless and hitless innings, striking out two Falcons on the day.Â
