EVANSTON, Ill. – Rutgers baseball completed the weekend sweep at Northwestern with a comfortable 5-1 win on Sunday afternoon at Rocky and Berenice Miller Park in Evanston.
The Scarlet Knights (23-16, 7-5) used a quality start from
Drew Conover and timely offense to defeat the Wildcats (6-28, 3-9) for the third straight day, win their fifth consecutive game and ninth out of their last 10.
It was the same story all three games of the series, as RU once again plated a run in the first inning. After two quick outs on four pitches,
Ryan Lasko worked a 12-pitch at-bat that culminated in a triple to left field. He came home on a balk to make it 1-0.
Rutgers rallied again with two outs in the fourth.
Evan Sleight scored on a wild pitch to make it 2-0 before
Josh Kuroda-Grauer hit a two-run single that deflected into left field, scoring
Cameron Love and
Jordan Sweeney to make it 4-0.
In the fifth,
Ryan Lasko hit his second home run in as many days and his 10th of the season, a solo shot to left field that gave the Scarlet Knights a 5-0 lead.
For the second straight week,
Drew Conover delivered a quality start in a Big Ten series finale. He tossed 7.0 innings, allowing one run on four hits, while striking out nine and walking three. He earned the win to improve to 4-3 with a 4.15 ERA on the season.
Joe Mazza pitched a scoreless eighth with a strikeout and
Ben Gorski polished off the victory with a 1-2-3 ninth inning.
Up next for Rutgers is a midweek contest at St. John's on Tuesday, followed by a weekend series on the road against Purdue.
