Softball Slays ETAMU In Lions Invite Finale

COMMERCE, Texas – Rutgers closed out its appearance at the Lions Invitational on Sunday, topping host East Texas A&M, 4-2, taking on the weekend's hosts in unseasonably cold 37-degree weather in the Lone Star State with gusting winds.

The Scarlet Knights came back from a one-run deficit to plate four in the sixth to finish out the invitational with a 4-1 record and move to 5-5 on the year.

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING
  •  Freshman Ella Harrison garnered her third-straight complete-game victory to move to 3-3 on the year. She gave up two runs on five hits while fanning nine. Harrison finished the weekend 3-0 with a 1.00 ERA and 26 strikeouts.
  • Redshirt sophomore Bailey Briggs delivered a two-RBI single to start off RU's scoring in the sixth along with a run scored.
  • Freshman Baileigh Burtis went 2-for-4 with a run scored.
  • Freshmen Riley Hwang and Kelsie Riggan both pinch ran and scored in the victory.
THE RUNDOWN
  • The Lions produced the contest's first two hits, resulting in the hosts taking a 1-0 lead. Montemayor doubled to right to lead off the bottom half of the third. With two outs, she scored on a Rodrigues single up the middle.
  • Rutgers took the lead with four runs in the top of the sixth. The Scarlet Knights loaded the bases on a pair of walks and single up the middle from Baileigh Burtis. Bailey Briggs dropped the ball into shallow center, beating out the Lion outfielder, for pinch runner Riley Hwang and Burtis to score. Pinch runner Kelsie Riggan added to the lead on a wild pitch and Briggs made it 4-1 after stealing home.
  • ETAMU added a run with a pair of doubles in the sixth. Tatum Wright went to center field and Emmie Miehe made it an RBI extra-base hit to left to trail 4-2 heading into the final inning.
UP NEXT
Rutgers softball heads to Cathedral, California for its second-straight trip to the Mary Nutter Softball Classic on February 20-22. While out west, the Scarlet Knights will face#18/23 Arkansas, #11/16 Missouri, #9/6 Tennessee, Bethune Cookman, Oregon State and UC Riverside.
