Baseball Drops Series Opener at Coastal Carolina

CONWAY, S.C. – Rutgers baseball dropped Friday's series opener to Coastal Carolina by a score of 10-0 at Springs Brooks Stadium. The Chanticleers (8-2) used an early barrage of offense to take control of the game early and defeat the Scarlet Knights (4-5) in seven innings.
CCU jumped ahead with a four-spot in the first inning. After loading the bases, a fielder's choice, bases-loaded walk, fielder's choice and single each scored a run to make it 4-0. The Chanticleers posted another two in the second on a two-out double. Three more crossed in the third to make it 8-0 thanks to a two-run single and an infield single.
The Chanticleers plated the final two runs of the game in the fifth on a two-run double to take a 10-0 lead. After RU was unable to score in the seventh, the game ended due to run rule.
Joe Mazza pitched three innings of relief, giving up two runs and striking out a career-high seven batters – three more than his previous high of four he set last week at Grand Canyon.
Game two between Rutgers and Coastal Carolina is set for 2 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.
