PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers men's lacrosse dropped a Saturday contest at SHI Stadium to St. Joe's. The Scarlet Knights dropped an 11-5 decision in front of 1,053 fans on an unseasonably warm, but windy afternoon.
Rutgers' five goals came from five different goal scorers. That included a historic goalkeeper goal for RU, as
Cardin Stoller launched in a full field strike to become the first goalkeeper to score for the Scarlet Knights during the tenure of head coach
Brian Brecht.
Logan Peters,
Colin Zeller,
Greyson Vorgang and
Colin Kurdyla also tallied in the game.
Rutgers' defense allowed a season-high 11 goals after previously holding the first five opponents of the season to single-digits, which had been the longest streak since 2010.
Cardin Stoller made 13 saves on the day. Long-stick midfielder
Ryan Splaine led the team with four caused turnovers and four ground balls.
Matthew Paolatto was 8-of-15 on faceoffs.
St. Joe's had advantages in shots (39-37) and ground balls (37-34). RU was undone by a poor performance in clearing (23-of-30) along with 24 turnovers.
The Scarlet Knights led 2-0 after the first seven minutes of the game, following Stoller's strike. However, over the next 48 minutes, St. Joe's outscored the hosts 11-1, before RU added two late goals to cut into the final margin.
Rutgers is back on the road next weekend. The Scarlet Knights head to in-state rival Princeton. The game against the No. 8 Tigers is at 7 p.m. next Saturday.
