PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers baseball (9-11) dropped the rubber match of its weekend series against Cal Baptist (10-10), 4-1, Sunday at Bainton Field. The Scarlet Knights loaded the bases in the ninth, but the Lancers escaped to pick up the win.
Ryan Kittredge pitched a career-high 7.2 innings with five strikeouts for CBU, allowing three hits, one walk and no runs. Julian Orozco collected his first save of the season.
For Rutgers,
Dillon Ryan pitched a season-long 2.2 innings of relief with three strikeouts, as the Scarlet Knights used five pitchers overall.
The Lancers recorded a double and two groundouts to push across the first run in the top of the second.
Hunter Hoxie came on later in the inning and stranded two inherited runners with a strikeout.
The game stayed 1-0 until the top of the seventh when CBU added three.
In the ninth, RU loaded the bases with no outs, but a 5-4-3 double play quelled the rally.
The Scarlet Knights head to the west coast to face No. 8 Oregon State Tuesday at 8:30 p.m. ET. It will be the first meeting between the programs since the 2007 NCAA Regional in Charlottesville, Virginia.
