PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers baseball defeated Princeton by a score of 8-1 in midweek action at Bainton Field on Wednesday.
The Scarlet Knights (11-14) used eight unanswered runs to take control of the game against the Tigers (6-16) while the pitching was dominant, allowing just two hits and striking out 11.
Zach Gleason made the start for RU and delivered three quality innings. Gleason's only blemish was a solo home run in the first, as he struck out a season-high five batters.
Despite trailing 1-0 after two innings, the Scarlet Knights scored three in the third to take the lead. Yomar Carreras lifted a sac fly with the bases loaded, Ty Doucette singled and Jack Sweeney walked with the bases loaded to make it 3-1.
RU added another on a Trevor Cohen sac fly to extend the lead to 4-1 after four innings. A two-run home run from Matt Chatelle – his first of the season – made it 6-1 in the sixth. Chatelle had his best game in a Rutgers uniform, going 4-for-4 with a home run, two RBIs and two runs scored.
In the bottom of the seventh, Doucette stole third and scored on a throwing error to extend the lead to 7-1. Jack Sweeney followed with an RBI single to push it to 8-1 after seven.
After Gleason's strong start, a quartet of true freshmen provided five scoreless innings of relief to bridge the middle innings and keep the game under control.
Hunter Hoxie was first out of the bullpen, tossing 1.1 scoreless frames. Nolan Peel was next, throwing 1.2 perfect innings with three strikeouts. Charles Batista pitched a scoreless seventh with two strikeouts and Andrew Rondini set down Princeton in order in the eighth.
Preston Prince pitched a scoreless ninth to cap off the victory, striking out one.
