
Baseball Drops Series Opener to Washington

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers baseball dropped Friday's series opener to Washington by a score of 3-1 at Bainton Field.
The Scarlet Knights (11-15, 2-5) were shut down at the plate by a strong pitching effort from the Huskies (12-15, 5-2), whose two runs in the first innings were enough to secure the victory.
Justin Shadek had a strong outing on the mound, tying his career high with five innings, giving up two runs on three hits and four walks, striking out four.
UW scored a pair in the first on a balk and wild pitch to take a 2-0 lead. The Huskies added an insurance run in the seventh on a sac fly to make it 3-0.
Dillon Ryan provided three strong innings of relief, giving up one run on two hits and two walks, striking out two.
Quinn Berglin pitched a clean ninth inning, with Trevor Cohen hitting his first home run of the season in the ninth to make it 3-1. With a hit-by-pitch after, the tying run came to the plate twice, but a pair of strikeouts ended the game.

- Trevor Cohen recorded his 10th multi-hit game of the season and his fifth multi-hit game in just seven Big Ten contests.
- The Rutgers defense has not committed an error in 14 consecutive games, raising its Big Ten-best fielding percentage to .986.
