Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader at Charleston
Feb 14 | Baseball
MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – Rutgers baseball swept its doubleheader at College of Charleston Saturday, winning game one, 13-2, and game two, 5-2, at Patriots Point.
The Scarlet Knights (2-1) built early leads in both games and rode strong starting pitching to take control of the series against the Cougars (1-2),
Game 1
An RBI single from Chase Krewson got things started in the third, giving RU a 1-0 lead. With things tied 1-1 in the fifth, Peyton Bonds launched a solo home run to make it 2-1. Krewson added on with a two-run single in the sixth, which was followed by an RBI single from Charlie Meglio and a double steal that led to a run, making it 6-1.
That would prove to be all Rutgers needed, as Zack Konstantinovsky dazzled in his first game since 2024. Konstantinovsky pitched five innings, giving up just one run on two hits, striking out nine and walking just one.
In the top of the eighth, RU added four more thanks to a solo home run from Krewson, another RBI single from Meglio and a two-run single from Matt Chatelle.
Meglio doubled in another in the ninth, followed by an RBI hit-by-pitch and another double steal to bring the score to 13-2.
Vincent Borghese relieved Konstantinovsky, pitching two innings and giving up a run on two hits with a pair of strikeouts. Andrew Rondini finished off the victory with two scoreless innings and two strikeouts.
Game 2
The second game saw another fast start from the Rutgers lineup. After the first two batters reached, Tristan Salinas drove in one with an RBI groundout and Trey Wells added another with an RBI single.
With an early 2-0 lead, Dallin Harrison went to work in his RU debut. Harrison would pitch five strong innings, giving up just one run on six hits, while striking out six with no walks.
In the second inning, a passed ball and double steal led to two more runs for the Scarlet Knights, making it 4-0. RU pushed the score to 5-0 after a run scored on a double play in the third.
Jason Masick entered in the sixth to close out the game. While the Cougars pushed across a run in the bottom of the sixth, Masick was able to limit the damage and finish off the victory.
The series finale between Rutgers and Charleston is set for 12 p.m. tomorrow.
