Women's Lacrosse Loses to No. 21 Army in Season Opener

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers women's lacrosse (0-1) lost to No. 21 Army (1-0), 19-14, on Friday inside the Busch Practice Bubble.
Sophomore Caroline Ling produced a career-high five goals, which included a hat trick in the first half. Senior Lily Dixon tallied five points on three assists and two helpers, while rookies Annalise Messina and Kate Theofield contributed two goals apiece.
Senior Katie Buck secured a game-high eight draw controls, becoming the 11th player in program history to hit 100 for her career. Sophomore Charlee Thomas scooped up three ground balls and caused a turnover.
RU held a 5-2 lead at the end of the first quarter, with Ling netting two goals before the first break. Dixon, Messina and senior Ava Chiarella all contributed goals in the first 15 mintues of play.
Army scored five consecutive goals to regain the lead before back-to-back goals from Theofield and Link tied the score at 7-7 with 5:06 left before the midpoint. Dixon scored on an unassisted goal to give Rutgers back the lead, but two goals in the final three minutes from the Black Knights gave them a 9-8 advantage heading into the locker room.
Army outscored the Scarlet Knights, 4-1, in the third quarter before a goal from redshirt sophomore Samantha Swanovich brought the score to within three at the start of the fourth. However, a 5-1 scoring run over the next 12 minutes put the game out of reach.
