Baseball Loses to Troy

GREENVILLE, N.C. – Rutgers baseball fell on Sunday to Troy by a score of 2-1 at Clark-LeClair Stadium in the Keith LeClair Classic.
The Scarlet Knights (5-5) received strong pitching throughout, but a solo home run and ninth inning single were the difference for the Trojans (5-6).
True freshman Chris Sand made the start for the second straight Sunday. He was once again effective, going three innings and giving up one run on three hits with a strikeout and no walks.
He was relieved by Joe Mazza, who delivered one of the top outings of his career, throwing four scoreless innings on just 39 pitches, yielding one hit and one walk.
After Vincent Borghese threw a scoreless eighth, Tristan Salinas led off the bottom half with a walk. Salinas went to second on a sac bunt, advanced to third on a groundout and scored to tie the game on a wild pitch.
With the game tied 1-1 in the top of the ninth, Troy hit a two-out single with a man on third to take the lead.
Despite a one-out double from Peyton Bonds in the bottom of the ninth, he was stranded to end the game.
Rutgers returns to action for the home opener Tuesday against Georgetown. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. at Bainton Field.
