Mar 18 | Men's Lacrosse
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers men's lacrosse had an additional national accolade this week with two student-athletes earning spots on the USILA Team of the Week. Faceoff specialist John Scarelli and attackman Colin Kurdyla earned the recognition.
A sophomore in his first season as RU's primary faceoff specialist, Scarelli had his top two performances of the season in back-to-back games as RU went 2-0 against St. John's and Bellarmine. The Winter Park, Fla. Native went 12-of-17 on faceoffs against St. Johns and 14-of-18 against Bellarmine to win nearly 75% across two games. He also scooped nine ground balls against Bellarmine, his career-high. Scarelli excelled from the outset in both games, as he was 9-of-12 in first half vs. St. John's and 11-of-14 in first half vs. Bellarmine to help RU establish possession advantage early and put the game away. For the season, Scarelli is 80-of-146 on faceoffs (54.7%) with 29 ground balls.
Kurdyla added one additional recognition to his awards haul this week, as he was previously named national Player of the Week by two different publications and the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week. The Bridgewater, N.J. native had a historic offensive week with 20 combined points on eight goals and 12 assists. He notched the program's most points in a game in 33 years with 11 points at St. John's (four goals, seven assists), then followed with nine points against Bellarmine (four goals, five assists) to become the first RU player ever to have two games of 9+ points in the same season.
This represents the second and third USILA Team of the Week members for RU this season. Previously, goalkeeper Cardin Stoller earned the recognition.
The Scarlet Knights are back in action this weekend for the start of Big Ten play. No. 17 Rutgers hosts No. 7 Ohio State on Saturday at 1 p.m. The battle between ranked foes will be Military Appreciation Day and stream on B1G+.
