Women’s Lacrosse Earns 14-8 Win at San Diego State

SAN DIEGO – Rutgers women's lacrosse (8-4) defeated San Diego State (2-9), 14-8, on Monday night at Aztec Field. It marked the Scarlet Knights' third straight win and second consecutive on the West Coast after defeating USC last Saturday in Los Angeles.
Freshman Kate Theofield matched a career high with seven points on four goals and three helpers. RU featured nine different goal scorers in the win, which included multi-goal outings from junior Payton Tini and freshman Annalise Messina. Senior Kayleigh Coughlin and sophomore Caroline Ling each had two assists.
Sophomore goalkeeper Stella Quilty tied a career high with 13 saves to earn her second straight win in cage. Senior Lily Dixon caused four turnovers and helped Rutgers force the Aztecs into 16 turnovers as a team. Senior Katie Buck secured five draw controls, including the 200th of her collegiate career.
Dixon netted the first goal of the game four minutes in, taking a pass from Theofield and finishing for a quick 1-0 lead. Rutgers netted three more before the first break, including a free-position goal from rookie Gabby Mariani for its first three-goal lead of the night. SDSU countered with a score late in the quarter to make it 4-2 Scarlet Knights after the first 15 minutes of play.
Defense was on display in the next period, with Quilty stopping five shots in the second quarter. Rookie Campbell Spillett netted her first goal of her career, while Theofield added her second of the night to give RU a 7-5 advantage at halftime.
Quilty finished with 10 saves on 19 shots faced heading into the locker room. RU forced the Aztecs into eight first-half turnovers and was nine-of-nine on clear attempts before the midpoint.
San Diego State scored three straight goals in the third quarter to take its first lead before Rutgers responded with two consecutive goals. Sophomore Francesca Urtis found senior Ava Chiarella to tie the game at the 4:40 mark, while Theofield's third of the night made it 9-8 Scarlet Knights heading into the fourth quarter.
It was all Rutgers down the stretch, as the Scarlet Knights ended the night on a 5-0 scoring run. Tini scored twice during the stretch, while Messina, Theofield and sophomore Delainey Sutley all contributed goals to help RU put away their third consecutive road win.
