Mar 31 | Baseball
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers baseball dropped a tight battle to Hofstra on Tuesday night at Bainton Field, losing by a score of 3-2.
Despite the Scarlet Knights (15-13) getting plenty of traffic on the bases, the Pride (9-14) delivered key pitching in big moments to earn the victory.
RU outhit Hofstra by an 11-7 margin but collected just one extra-base hit and left 11 runners on base in the game. Down a run going into the bottom of the ninth, Peyton Bonds led off with a single but was stranded on second to end the game.
The Pride scored on a single in the third and took the lead with an RBI single and sac fly in the fifth to make it 3-1.
After a Yomar Carreras double in the eighth, Matt Chatelle made it a one-run game with an RBI single. With two on and one out, a flyout and strikeout ended the threat.
Andrew Rondini contributed 3.1 perfect innings out of the bullpen, retiring all 10 batters he faced with three strikeouts. Matt Chatelle went 3-for-3 with an RBI single and a walk.
Rutgers is back in action this weekend in Big Ten play, taking on Indiana for a three-game set in Bloomington.
