Baseball Drops Series Finale at Indiana
Apr 05 | Baseball
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Rutgers baseball lost Sunday's rubber match at Indiana by a score of 8-2 at Bart Kaufman Field.
The Scarlet Knights (16-15, 5-7) went in a 7-0 hole to the Hoosiers (12-19, 5-10) and were unable to complete another big comeback on the road, losing the series as a result.
Despite Rutgers having no issues getting runners on base, the Scarlet Knights left nine runners on through the first five innings, allowing IU to build a lead in the middle innings and secure the momentum.
RU starter Dallin Harrison had to exit after just two batters in the first and was relieved by Jordan Saviñon. While Saviñon did well to keep Indiana at bay, the Hoosiers eventually broke out with a solo homer in the fourth. The Hoosiers added two more in the fifth on an RBI double and an RBI groundout to make it 3-0.
Indiana put things away in the sixth, scoring four more to extend its lead to 7-0. RU added a pair in the seventh on an RBI single from Matt Chatelle and sac fly from Yomar Carreras, but that was all the offense on the day for the Scarlet Knights.
A wild pitch in the bottom of the eighth gave IU an 8-2 lead for good measure, before Rutgers went down in order in the ninth to end the game.
Chatelle reached base all four times he came up, singling twice and walking another two more times. Charlie Meglio also walked three times and singled with a run scored.
Rutgers returns to action on Tuesday for a midweek game at Seton Hall before welcoming No. 1 UCLA to Bainton Field for the weekend.
