Tennis Drops Close Road Match to Lamar

BEAUMONT, Texas - Playing its second match in as many days, the Rutgers tennis team (6-7, 0-3) lost to Lamar, 4-3, Wednesday afternoon at the Thompson Family Tennis Center in Beaumont, Texas.

The Scarlet Knight split singles play, but lost the doubles point, 2-1, for the final result.

In the No. 1 position, senior Gina Li (Hillsborough, N.J.) delivered her second-straight win in singles play, downing Katya Lapayeva in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4. Senior Mariam Zein (Sugarland, Texas) also collected her second-straight singles victory in the No. 4 position against Talisa Merchiers, 6-4, 6-4.

Re-entering the singles lineup, sophomore Farris Cunningham (Houston, Texas) produced a 6-0, 6-3 win against Hanna Elfving in the No. 6 position.

RU managed one win in doubles play, as junior Ksenija Tihomirova (Riga, Latvia) and sophomore Chloe Lee (Albuquerque, N.M.) combined for a 6-4 victory in the No. 2 position. But Lamar had wins in the No. 1 and No. 3 spots to secure the point and ultimately the win.

Rutgers returns to New Jersey for its next match, hosting No. 56 Indiana at the East Brunswick Racquet Club on Saturday, March 19.
