NEWARK-- Rutgers' second in-state rivalry in as many weeks ended in another last-second make, but this time suffered a heartbreaking 83-82 loss to Princeton at the Prudential Center Saturday afternoon.
Five-star Dylan Harper shined in the seventh annual Never Forget Tribute Classic. He had 17 first-half points on 70 percent shooting en route to a 22-point performance. Harper has recorded 20+ points in four straight contests and 10 times in 12 games.
Free-throws were the difference through the first 20 minutes - RU shot 12-for-14 from the line while Princeton was just 1-for-7. Sophomore Jordan Derkack accounted for half of Rutgers' makes as they took a 46-44 lead into the break. Derkack (10) reached double-figures for the second time this season.
Overall, Rutgers shot 18-for-23 from the charity stripe, the Tigers 8-for-18.
Junior Emmanuel Ogbole wasted no time out of the huddle, scoring five points and a massive swat to extend Rutgers' lead. They had a 61-55 advantage at the under-16 timeout before missing eight consecutive and allowing the Tigers a 6-0 run.
Princeton-transfer Zach Martini contributed seven points against his former team including a three that gave the Scarlet Knights a one-point lead with eight minutes remaining.
Five-star Ace Bailey recorded his fourth double-double - he had 15 points and 12 rebounds. With 20 seconds remaining, sophomore Jamichael Davis stole an inbounds pass leading to a Bailey three-pointer that gave RU a 82-81 lead.
Princeton responded with a quick layup and Harper was unable to knock down his second consecutive game-winning buzzer beater.
Rutgers veterans Davis and Jeremiah Williams had six and nine points respectively, though foul-trouble limited their availability. Davis had a career-high four steals and two blocks and freshman Lathan Sommerville added eight points himself.
Xaivian Lee and Caden Pierce were excellent for Princeton. Lee had 21 points, 11 assists, and six rebounds while Pierce had 21 points and 14 rebounds.
There were 13 ties and 17 lead changes throughout the contest, but 19 offensive rebounds and 23 second-chance points helped Princeton secure the win.
Rutgers (7-5) has nine days to regroup before hosting Columbia at 5 pm on Dec. 30.
