Box Score COLUMBUS, OHIO -- Rutgers was defeated at the Schottenstein Center, falling 80-66 against Ohio State Saturday afternoon.
The Scarlet Knights started out strong, making four of their first five shots and four of their first six threes, but the Buckeyes made 12 of their first 17 attempts and took a 39-31 lead into the half. The Buckeyes scored 20 points in the paint and 11 points off six Rutgers turnovers.
Sophomore
Jordan Derkack and freshman
Lathan Sommerville entered half as Rutgers' leading scorers with six points each. Five-star freshmen
Ace Bailey and
Dylan Harper had a slow start shooting a combined 2-for-10 through the first 20 minutes. Rutgers shot 37 percent as a team - Ohio State at 57 percent.
Both freshman phenoms found their groove early in the second half, hitting the first six baskets for RU and combining for 18 points. Bailey finished with 12 points and seven rebounds, Harper with 18 points and four assists.
Junior
Emmanuel Ogbole and Sommerville added 10 and eight points respectively and each posted five rebounds.
Devin Royal and Bruce Thornton were fantastic for the Buckeyes. They each scored 22 points on a combined 17-for-25 shooting (68 percent).
Rutgers (5-4) will look to snap its three-game losing streak on Tuesday, Dec. 10, when it takes on Penn State in its Big Ten home opener at 7 p.m. It will be the team's first home game since facing Merrimack on Nov. 20 three weeks ago.
