Baseball Routs Delaware to Finish Off Sweep

NEWARK, Del. – Rutgers baseball lit up the scoreboard for third straight day to cruise to a 14-3 victory over Delaware and finish off the series sweep.

The Scarlet Knights (13-6) used an eight-run sixth inning and collected another 20 hits to take down the Blue Hens (8-10) for the third straight day.

RJ Johnson Jr. led off the game with a triple and scored on a sac fly from Trevor Cohen to open the scoring in the first. Ty Doucette and Johnny Volpe followed with an RBI single each to stretch it to 3-0.

While Delaware chipped away and eventually tied the game at 3-3 in the fourth, that would be all the offense for the Blue Hens the rest of the day.

Doucette gave Rutgers the lead in the top of the fifth when he pulled a solo home run over the wall in the right field. RU then delivered the big inning of the game in the sixth, putting up eight runs to make it 12-3,

Cameron Love opened the action in the sixth with a triple to the wall in centerfield. Johnson Jr. drove him in with an infield single to make it 5-3. A wild pitch, RBI single from Tony Santa Maria and error each scored a run to give the Scarlet Knights an 8-3 advantage.

With Kuroda-Grauer on base, Doucette launched a two-run shot to the deepest part of right-center for his third home run of the series and first career multi-home run game. Johnson Jr. added two more with a double into left field to cap off an inning that saw RU plate eight runs on six hits and send 13 batters to the plate.

After plating two more in the ninth, Rutgers would secure the 14-3 victory. On the weekend, the Scarlet Knights scored 56 runs on 64 hits.

Zack Konstantinovsky started for RU on Sunday and pitched four innings, giving up three runs on five hits, striking out four and walking three. Jake Marshall earned the win in relief, pitching three scoreless innings, giving up three hits while striking out three and walking just one. Donovan Zsak pitched the eighth inning and struck out all three batters he faced, while Ben Gorski finished off the game with a scoreless ninth.

Rutgers returns home to Bainton Field for six straight games, starting with a pair of midweek contests against Rider (Tuesday) and Lafayette (Wednesday).
