COLLEGE PARK, MD -- Rutgers was downed 90-81 by No. 18 Maryland Sunday afternoon.
The Scarlet Knights defense caused the Terrapins to shoot just 3-for-15 from the floor to start, but a strong performance from Maryland freshman Derik Queen gave them a 49-38 advantage at the break. RU's freshmen combined for 30 of its 38 first half points. Queen finished the game with a career-high 29 points, 15 rebounds, and five assists including a first half double-double.
After trailing by as many as 15, Rutgers cut the deficit to three with 14 minutes to play, but did not have enough to overcome it.
Three-point shooting made the difference - Maryland shot 10-for-27 from deep while Rutgers was just 3-for-16.
Freshman Dylan Grant posted a career-high 19 points and eight rebounds on 50 percent shooting while five-star Dylan Harper led the scoring for Rutgers with 20.
Freshman Lathan Sommerville was one rebound shy of his first career double-double - he finished with 12 points and nine rebounds.
Captain Zach Martini added 10 points including two of Rutgers' three makes from beyond the arc.
Rutgers shot 26-for-31 from the free-throw line and won the rebounding battle 43-37. RU scored 22 second-chance points off 15 offensive boards and 49 percent of its points in the paint.
Five-star Ace Bailey had a quiet performance with four points but headed to the locker room midway through the second half due to an illness.
Rutgers falls to 12-12 (5-8 in conference play) while Maryland improves to 18-6 (8-5). The Terrapins are 14-1 at home.
The Scarlet Knights host Iowa (13-10, 4-8) on Wednesday, Feb. 12, looking to get back in the win column.
