Men’s Lacrosse Hosts St. John’s on Tuesday

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers men's lacrosse is back in action for a Tuesday midweek contest. The Scarlet Knights will host St. John's at 3 p.m. at SHI Stadium.
The game will be streamed live on B1G+ with Dom Savino and Alex Schoen on the call. There will also be a radio broadcast via Rutgers' Student Radio, WRSU 88.7 FM, with Matt Mangam and Jack Rabenhorst on the call.
Rutgers enters the two-game week at 3-4 overall. The Scarlet Knights are seeking to snap a two-game losing streak, each coming by matching 11-5 scorelines against St. Joe's and No. 4 Princeton.
No RU opponent has scored more than 11 goals in a game this season against RU through seven contest. The Scarlet Knights have surrendered just 54 goals through seven games (7.7 goals per game).
That marks the longest into a season RU has gone without allowing at least 12 goals in a game since 2013. The marks the fewest goals surrendered in the first seven games under head coach Brian Brecht and overall since 2011.
Matthew Paolatto is 73-of-110 on faceoffs. He has won 66.4% at the 'X' this year, including 49-of-65 in his last four games (75.3%).
Ryan Splaine leads RU with 12 caused turnovers. Tommy Mendyke has 11 caused turnovers, one shy of tying his career-high from last season. Mendyke also has 18 ground balls, two away from tying last season's career-high of 20.
Under third-year head coach Justin Turri, the Red Storm were selected for fifth in the BIG EAST in the preseason conference poll. Turri, who spent the previous four seasons as the offensive coordinator in the Big Ten at Michigan, is 6-30 at the helm in Queens after a 2-5 start to this season. The Red Storm have wins over NJIT and Quinnipiac with losses to Delaware, Hofstra (OT), Jacksonville (OT), Fairfield and Bryant.
Brian Kelly and Bobby Seel were named Preseason All-BIG EAST selections. Kelly has had three straight 40-point seasons, and so far this season leads the team with 17 goals and 11 assists. Seel is coming off a 41-point season last year (25 goals, 16 assists) and has seven goals and seven assists this year.
Adrian Nowak has 10 goals and 14 assists. Ryan Ormond has 13 goals.
The Red Storm have split faceoffs between Adam Dembicki (45-of-98) and Ethan Wiegand (30-of-80). Patrick Scarborough has been the primary of two goalkeepers, with a 52.9% save percentage and 10.99 goals-against-average.
Both teams have played seven games. RU has outscored opponents 58-54. In comparison, St. John's has been outscored 93-76.
Rutgers and St. John's are set to play for the 32nd time all-time, dating back to 1984. RU has had the upper hand, holding a 24-7 advantage in the all-time series. The Scarlet Knights are currently on a nine-game winning streak against the Red Storm, dating back to 2014.
The Scarlet Knights have won the past three games (2020, 2022, 2023) by a combined margin of 60-22. RU has won five home games and are 8-2 at home against St. John's.
Among current Scarlet Knights, Dante Kulas has recorded six goals and four assists in two career games against St. John's. Shane Murphy had his career-best performance with a hat trick in 2023 against the Red Storm, while Logan Peters had one goal and one assist.
Rutgers remains home this week to complete their final two-game week of the regular season. The Scarlet Knights host No. 19 UMass on Saturday at noon in the final non-conference game of the season. Big Ten play begins on Saturday, March 22, with RU opening league play at No. 11 Johns Hopkins. Big Ten play will feature matchups against teams ranked No. 1, No. 4, No. 10 and No. 11 in this week's Media Poll. RU has also already played teams ranked No. 2 (Princeton) and No. 3 (Army) in this week's Media Poll.
