Softball Run-Rules Wagner In Home Opener

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers softball open its home portion of its 2025 schedule on Tuesday afternoon with a 9-1 run-rule victory over Wagner.

Rutgers belted out nine hits, including the first career home run from Siera Hoekstra, and three RBIs from Baileigh Burtis, while LA Matthews walked it off with a sac fly in the fifth.

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING
  • Freshman Bailey Burtis went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and a run scored.
  • Redshirt sophomore Bailey Briggs was 3-for-3 with two runs scored an RBI
  • Jillian Anderson collected a double while Siera Hoekstra added two runs, including one from a solo home run.
  • Dezaria Johnson got the start, but it was Kelsey Hoekstra coming in to pick up the win. Across Hoesktra's three innings, the freshman allowed no runs and no hits and walked two.
THE RUNDOWN
  • Wagner took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first as the bases were loaded with P Janicki to walk in a run.
  • It was all Rutgers to follow though starting off coming to the plate for two runs in their first at-bat. Baileigh Burtis drove in two runs on a single to left five batters in and the Scarlet Knights kept scoring from there with at least one run in the second, third, fourth and fifth.
  • A Jillian Anderson sac bunt put Siera Hoekstra and Addie Osborne into scoring position with the pair plating on back-to-back singles from LA Matthews and Bailey Briggs in the second.
  • Hoekstra gave RU a 5-1 lead on a solo shot over the fence in right field in the third.
  • Burtis drove in another run on a base hit in the fourth and later scored on a wild pitch to make it 7-1.
  • The Scarlet Knights added two more in the fifth to invoke the run rule. Hailey Stripling walked and came home on Jillian Anderson's double to left. After advancing to third on a throwing error in trying to stop Stripling's run, the senior Scarlet Knight scored on a LA Matthews' sac fly to center to end the game.
