Huskies Hustle Past Softball In First B1G Meeting With Scarlet Knights

SEATTLE, Wash. – Washington softball took both games from Rutgers softball in the first Big Ten meeting between the Huskies and Scarlet Knights.

Washington got a one-hitter with Bailey Briggs thwarting the shutout in the top of the fifth in a 9-0 game one loss.

The Huskies made it back-to-back one-hitters with a 12-0 game two victory as Washington gave up two walks along with Stephanie Kraska's double in the second inning.

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING
  • Redshirt sophomore Bailey Briggs captured RU's lone hit while senior Jillian Anderson reached on a walk.
  • Freshman right-hander Kelsey Hoeskstra tossed four innings giving up six earned runs on eight hits with a pair of strikeouts. She dropped to 5-8 on the year.
THE RUNDOWN
  • Back-to-back walks to lead off the third for Washington led to an RBI base hit down the left-field line for Alexis DeBoer. While RU got outs on the next two Husky batters, a miscue at short pushed across another run while Tua Durst followed with a two-run double to right for a 4-0 Washington lead.
  • Four hits led to five runs in the fifth for the Huskies. Charity Sevaaetasi used an RBI single to start, while the bases were loaded for Alycia Flores to clear the bases on a double down the left field line. Riley Pescheck added an RBI single to left to extend the host's advantage to 9-0.

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING
  • Redshirt freshman Stephanie Kraska collected a double while redshirt sophomore Gaelen Kelly and graduate student LA Matthews reached on walks.
  • Rookie right-hander Ella Harrison dropped to 10-10 on the year, tossing three innings and giving up five earned runs on seven hits. She struck out four along the way.
THE RUNDOWN
  • In the first, Hailey Stripling reached on an error at short and eventually found her way to third following Baileigh Burtis' fielder's choice. Stripling, however, was caught in a rundown to retire the side.
  • RU had two aboard in the second. With two outs, Stephanie Kraska doubled to left and Galen Kelly walked, but the Scarlet Knights were unable to advance any further.
  • Washington captured four runs on four hits for a 4-0 lead after two innings in the books. Tia Durst singled thru the left side to plate the Husky's leadoff of the inning while Riley Peschek fielder's choice allowed Washington to score a pair, as the Scarlet Knights passed the ball around the infield attempting to spot the hosts from advancing, to go ahead 3-0.  Jadyn Glab, meanwhile, singled giving Jade Bubke time to score on the throw in from the outfield.
  • Scoring for the Huskies continued in the third with an additional three runs. Alexis DeBoer doubled to center and scored on an infield miscue. Later in the inning, Durst singled to the outfield with two Huskies crossing the plate following an error at home in trying to stop the runs from scoring.
  • Five more runs came across for Washington off six hits in the fourth. DeBoer captured a two-run double and Alycia Flores went over the left field wall for another two runs. The Huskies later had the bases loaded giving Haley Winckler the opportunity to score on Jing Gardner on a single to left. 
UP NEXT
Rutgers softball returns home next weekend for a two-game series with No. 8 Oregon. The Scarlet Knights and Ducks will square off on BTN on Friday, March 28 at 4 p.m. Game two will take place on Saturday, March 29 at 3 p.m. on B1G+. Admission to all Rutgers softball home games is free.
