Baseball Wins Rubber Match Over Washington

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers baseball won its rubber match over Washington by a score of 6-3 at Bainton Field on Sunday afternoon. 
 
The Scarlet Knights (13-15, 4-5) used a three-run sixth and strong bullpen pitching to beat the Huskies (12-17, 5-4) to secure their first conference series win of the year. 

After giving up two runs in the top of the first, RU rallied to tie the game in the bottom half. Peyton Bonds and Ty Doucette each singled and Brennan Hyde sent a single back up the middle to score them both and tie the score at 2-2. 

Quinn Berglin came in to get the last out of the first and went on to provide his best outing as a Scarlet Knight. He went 5.1 innings and gave up just one run on one hit, striking out a season-high seven. 

With Berglin shutting down the UW offense, the Rutgers bats were finally able to break through in the bottom of the sixth. With two men on, Jack Sweeney delivered a go-ahead single to bring home Doucette. Brennan Hyde added another with a sac fly and JT Thompson delivered a two-out, pinch-hit double down the left field line to make it 5-2. 

In the top of the seventh, the leadoff man for the Huskies reached and Luke Fithian came and got the last three outs of the inning with the leadoff man scoring to make it 5-3. Rutgers got the run back in the bottom half after a Bonds double and Doucette single to make it 6-3. 

Fithian then struck out three in the eighth and got the final three outs of the ninth to secure the win and earn his first save of the season. 

With the win, Rutgers secured its first Big Ten series win of the season and won its first-ever series against Washington.

  • Ty Doucette recorded his ninth multi-hit game of the season. 
  • JT Thompson recorded his sixth multi-hit game of the season. 
  • Peyton Bonds recorded his ninth multi-hit game of the season. 
  • The Rutgers defense has not committed an error in 16 consecutive games, raising its Big Ten-best fielding percentage to .987.

Up next for Rutgers is a midweek contest with Hofstra at 6 p.m. on Tuesday.
