WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Rutgers men's basketball fell by a 100-71 final score against No. 18 Purdue at Mackey Arena on Tuesday night. The Boilermakers shot 56.1 percent for the game, including 50% from three-point range (18-of-36).
The Boilermakers scored exactly 50 points in each half. It was the most three-pointers, best field goal percentage and most field goals (37) by a RU opponent this season.
It marked the most points allowed by the Scarlet Knights in the
Steve Pikiell era. The last time RU surrendered as many points in regulation was in 2016, also against Purdue (107 points on Jan. 18, 2016).
Dylan Harper led RU with 13 points. He has now scored 515 points this season, moving past Phil Sellers' freshman season for the second most points ever by a RU true freshman. He is just two points behind Mike Rosario, who scored 517 as a freshman in 2008-09.
Ace Bailey had 12 points. He has 504 points, two behind Sellers and 13 behind Rosario.
Rutgers opened the game scoring the ball well, making 9-of-15 shots to open the contest. The Scarlet Knights scored 27 points in the first 10 minutes, and finished the opening half with 41 points. It marked the fourth time in the past five halves, dating back to the start of the USC game, that the Scarlet Knights posted 40+ points in a half.
However, RU trailed by nine points at the intermission due to the home team's hot shooting. The Boilermakers shot 69.2 percent, including 11-of-17 (64.7%) from three-point distance, en route to a 50-41 advantage at the break.
Purdue came out of halftime on an 8-0 run to extend the lead to 58-41 and force an early RU timeout. The Boilermakers capitalized on that initial push, extending the run to 21-5 and 28-7, pushing the deficit to 30 points and putting the game out of reach.
Up next, Rutgers returns home for the regular season finale. RU hosts Minnesota on Sunday, a 1 pm game that will be Senior Day.
