ATLANTA – Rutgers outfielder
Trevor Cohen was selected by the San Francisco Giants with the 85th overall pick in the third round of the 2025 MLB Draft on Sunday night.
Cohen is the third Rutgers player to be drafted by the Giants, joining Bill Malloy (1996, sixth round) and Robert Kenney (1967, 38th round).
Cohen put together one of the best hitting seasons in Big Ten history in 2025, setting a conference and program record with 56 hits in conference play. His .467 average in conference play led the league by 86 points. For the season,
Cohen's 24 doubles tied a program record, and his 91 hits are tied with Billy McCarthy for eighth-most in a season in program history.
Cohen was one of the toughest outs in the entire country, with his 5.5 K% leading the Power Four and the Big Ten, as he was also the toughest player in the conference and Power Four to strike out – just once every 15.7 at-bats.
Cohen collected his 200th career hit against Illinois and his 223 career hits are 11th all-time at Rutgers. On the season,
Cohen hit .387 with two home runs, one triple and 24 doubles with 36 RBIs and 30 walks to just 15 strikeouts, adding six outfield assists. He was named to the All-Big Ten Second Team.
With the selection, Cohen becomes the 10th Scarlet Knight to be drafted in the last four seasons under head coach
Steve Owens. It also marks the third straight season that a Rutgers player has been taken in the first three rounds, with Cohen joining
Josh Kuroda-Grauer (third round, 2024) and Ryan Lasko (second round, 2023).
