PISCATAWAY, N.J. ā Rutgers women's soccer defeated Northwestern, 3-2, on Thursday night at Yurcak Field.
The Scarlet Knights (4-5-3, 3-4-0) scored early and never trailed against the Wildcats (5-6-3, 3-3-1).
It was a strong offensive effort for Rutgers, which held a 20-14 advantage in shots, including an 11-2 margin in the first half and a 12-9 advantage in shots on goal.
Freshman Lilia Calvert starred again for RU, scoring her fourth goal of the season and adding her third assist. Gabriela Gil and Morgan Hippeli each tallied a first-half goal to provide an early cushion.
In the 19th minute, Tommi Rose Valente made a deep run into Northwestern territory, finding Marian Dunne in the box. After a strong hold-up play, Dunne dished a pass to Gil, who beat the keeper with an outside-of-the-foot finish into the bottom-left corner.
Seven minutes later, the Scarlet Knights doubled their lead on a perfectly executed corner kick. Calvert played the corner to Julia Joseph outside the box, who sent a cross to a waiting Hippeli. Hippeli flicked a header over the keeper for her first career goal.
While the Wildcats got on the board in the 51st minute, Calvert had an immediate answer. After beating a defender down the left flank, she cut inside and blasted a left-footed shot over the keeper and into the net for a 3-1 lead.
Despite Northwestern scoring again in the 71st minute, the Rutgers defense held firm in the final moments of the game. Lindsey Hailey cleared a potential game-tying goal off the line, and goalkeeper Olivia Bodmer made multiple late saves to secure the victory.
All told, Bodmer made five saves to increase her career total to 268.
