
Baseball Drops Opener to Charleston

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – Rutgers baseball dropped its season opener to College of Charleston Friday night by a score of 8-3 at Patriots Point.
The Scarlet Knights (0-1) struck first, but the Cougars (1-0) scored five unanswered to take control and added on in the middle innings to earn the victory.
Peyton Bonds led off the game with a single into center, stole second and came around to score and give RU a 1-0 lead on an RBI single from Trey Wells.
The Cougars responded with a pair of runs in the bottom half on a bases-loaded walk and fielder's choice. The hosts took control of the game with a three-spot in the second on a pair of run-scoring doubles.
Down 5-1 in the fourth, Bonds singled with the bases loaded to score a pair a make it 5-3, but Charleston would add on a run apiece in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to extend the lead to 8-3.
RHP Jacob Pederson was strong in his Rutgers debut, firing a pair of scoreless innings out of the bullpen with four strikeouts.
OF Tyler Wiltsey lined a single up the middle in his first career at-bat in the top of the ninth.
The series against College of Charleston continues with a doubleheader Saturday. Game one will be nine innings and start at 1 p.m., with game two set for 30 minutes after and seven innings.
