Baseball Drops Game Two at Virginia Tech

BLACKSBURG, Va. – Rutgers baseball dropped a 9-8 contest at Virginia Tech on Saturday in extra innings.
Despite the Scarlet Knights (4-2) holding leads in the ninth and 10th innings, the Hokies (5-1) were able to come back to tie it in the ninth and walk it off on a two-run home run in the 10th.
Rutgers took an early lead in the first with Peyton Bonds scoring on a double play and Trey Wells coming around to score on a dropped popup. Virginia Tech had a quick response, scoring a pair on a two-run single to make it 2-2 after one.
Charlie Meglio and Wells hit back-to-back doubles in the third to put RU up 3-2 and Yomar Carreras added a sac fly to push it to 4-2. The Hokies got a run back with a solo homer in the fifth, but Ryan Jaros countered with a solo shot of his own in the sixth, giving the Scarlet Knights a 5-3 advantage.
With one out in the ninth, Virginia Tech pieced together a double and single to make it 5-4 before a bases-loaded walk made it 5-5.
In the top of the 10th, RU scored three on a pair of bases loaded walks and a wild pitch. However, the Hokies hit three home runs in the bottom half, including a two-run homer to walk it off and win 9-8 in 10 innings.
The series finale and rubber match between Rutgers and Virginia Tech will be at noon Sunday.
