Baseball Beats Monmouth in Run-Rule Fashion

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers baseball cruised to a 13-3 victory over Monmouth on Tuesday afternoon, winning the midweek showdown in seven-inning, run-rule fashion.
The Scarlet Knights (12-8) collected 13 runs on 10 hits and seven walks, beating the Hawks (8-9) to wrap up a 10-game homestand in the win column.
Peyton Bonds hit a home run and had four RBIs, while Charlie Meglio hit a two-run homer and Trey Wells, Matt Chatelle and Chase Krewson all collected multiple hits.
On the mound, Jacob Pedersen was dominant with five shutout innings, striking out six with no walks and earning the victory.
Thanks to the offensive outburst, Pedersen and starter Henry Radbill (2.0 IP) were the only two pitchers RU needed to use.
Meglio's two-run homer in the first gave the Scarlet Knights an early cushion. Krewson followed with an RBI single in the third and Bonds added a two-run home run to push the lead to 5-0.
Despite Monmouth adding three in the third, RU responded with one in the bottom half on a sac fly and another two in the sixth on a sac fly and an error.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Scarlet Knights bats added five to walk it off. Krewson singled in one, Julius Rosado and Bonds both drew bases-loaded walks and Yomar Carreras and Wells each had a run-scoring fielder's choice to make it 13-3 and end the game in seven.
Rutgers returns to action this weekend in conference play, hitting the road to take on Illinois with game one set for 7 p.m. Friday.
