Apr 15 | Baseball
MERION STATION, Pa. – Rutgers baseball hit three home runs and scored 11 runs on 12 hits to cruise to an 11-1 victory at St. Joe's on Wednesday afternoon at Smithson Field.
The Scarlet Knights (18-19) scored early and continued to add on against the Hawks (23-12), securing their fifth run-rule victory of the season.
Gabriel Rivera hit his first career home run in the contest and was one of five RU players to have multiple hits. The balanced offensive attack also saw five different Scarlet Knights collect multiple RBIs.
On the mound, Zach Gleason, Jason Masick and Jack Kirchner combined for seven strong innings of one-run ball. Gleason started and threw 3.2 innings, giving up one run on a solo homer and striking out three with no walks. Masick came in to finish off the fourth and finished with 2.1 scoreless innings, yielding just one hit and one walk with a strikeout. Kirchner closed it out in the seventh with a 1-2-3 inning, striking out a pair.
Rivera opened the scoring with a solo homer in the second. The Rutgers lineup then broke out for six runs in the third to take control of the game.
A single from Yomar Carreras scored the first run of the frame, followed by an RBI single from Rivera and two-run double from Trey Wells. Chase Krewson put the exclamation point on the inning with a two-run homer to push the score to 7-0.
While the Hawks got on the board with a solo homer in the fourth, that was all for the hosts.
Needing four runs to bring the run-rule into effect, the Scarlet Knights delivered in the top of the seventh. Matt Chatelle led off the frame with a single. Carreras then launched a homer over the scoreboard in left-center to make it 9-1. Rivera and Wells both walked and were moved over on a sac bunt from Krewson. Ryan Jaros followed with a bunt of his own, beating the play at first with Rivera and Wells both coming around to score and make it 11-1.
Kirchner struck out the first two batters he faced the bottom half en route to a 1-2-3 inning to close out the victory.
Rutgers returns to action this weekend at Penn State, with game one set for 5:30 p.m. Friday.
