Baseball Beats Penn State in Series Opener

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Rutgers baseball jumped out to a double-digit lead early and hung on to defeat Penn State by a score of 13-11 on Friday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
The Scarlet Knights (19-19, 6-10) scored 10 runs in the third to help themselves beat the Nittany Lions (10-25, 4-12), despite a furious comeback attempt.
Jack Sweeney continued his torrid week at the plate, going 3-for-5 with two more home runs and four RBIs. He now has four home runs on the week after two against Marist, bringing his season total to 5 in just seven starts. Matt Chatelle also hit his first homer of the season, with RU hitting three long balls on the day.
With the game tied at 0-0 going into the third, the Scarlet Knights saw 10 runs cross to blow the game open. An RBI single from Sweeney got the first run on the board. A wild throw on a sac bunt from Chatelle scored the second. A fielder's choice from Yomar Carreras added one, Trey Wells drove in two with a single, Ryan Jaros added one on an RBI groundout and Tristan Salinas singled in a pair to push it to 8-0. Hitting for the second time in the inning, Sweeney launched a no-doubter to make it 10-0.
A Chase Krewson RBI single would push it to 11-0 in the fourth.
After the Nittany Lions scored a pair in the fourth, Sweeney and Chatelle went deep in the fifth to make it 13-2.
Penn State kept chipping away,scoring four in the fifth and one in the seventh to bring it to 13-7. In the bottom of the ninth, the Nittany Lions loaded the bases with no outs and would score four runs. Jordan Saviñon came in with the bases loaded and no outs, but was able to get the final three outs to earn the save, stranding the tying run on base to end the game.
Game two between Rutgers and Penn State has a new start time, now set for 1 p.m. on Saturday.
