Borghese Leads Baseball to Series Win at Penn State

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Rutgers baseball used an eight-inning gem from Vincent Borghese to clinch the series with a 4-1 win over Penn State on Saturday afternoon at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.

The Scarlet Knights (20-19, 7-10) used four two-out RBIs and timely pitching to defeat the Nittany Lions (10-26, 4-13) and earn a series win over PSU for the first time since 2023.

Borghese provided his best outing as a Scarlet Knight, emptying the tank on 113 pitches across eight stellar innings. He gave up one run on an RBI single in second, but that was all he would allow. Sitting at 95 pitches and his team holding a 3-1 lead after seven, Borghese took the ball for the eighth to finish his outing. He struck out the first batter before a walk and a popout. RU stuck with him after a mound visiti and Borghese struck out his sixth batter of the game to end the inning.

Offensively, Ryan Jaros provided three RBIs on the day – all with two outs. In the top of the fifth, he sent a grounder into right field to tie the game at 1-1. In the top of the seventh, Penn State made a pitching change with two on and two outs. Jaros took a two-strike fastball back up the middle to score two more, making it 3-1.

Trey Wells provided the final insurance run with a bases-loaded walk in the eighth to push the score to 4-1.

Jason Masick got the call for the ninth, striking out two batters and getting a shallow flyout for the game's final out and earning his second save of the season.

Rutgers will go for the sweep against Penn State on Sunday, with first pitch set for 1 p.m. on Big Ten Plus.
