UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – A furious comeback for Rutgers baseball fell just short on Sunday, with RU falling to Penn State by a score of 14-13 at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
The Scarlet Knights (20-20, 7-11) were down 14-2 to the Nittany Lions (11-26, 5-13) and scored 11 unanswered runs but were unable to breakthrough to take a lead in the ninth.
Trey Wells led the charge offensively, having his best game for Rutgers with a 4-for-5 line, two home runs, a triple and five RBIs. He got the offense going for RU in the fourth with a two-run shot and led off the ninth with a solo home run to make it a one-run game.
Penn State scored early and often scoring two in the second and three in the third to take an early 5-0 lead. After Wells' first homer, PSU scored nine unanswered to make it 14-2.
Down by 12 in the top of the seventh, the Scarlet Knights were facing a run-rule loss. They would go on score seven in the frame to make it a brand-new ballgame.
Jack Sweeney singled in one to make it 14-3 before Julius Rosado hit a three-run triple to bring it to 14-6. An RBI groundout from Yomar Carreras and two-run triple from Wells brought it to 14-9.
During the RU comeback, Finn Haines delivered a pair of scoreless innings to keep Penn State from extending its lead.
In the top of the eighth, Ryan Jaros led off with a solo home run and Carreras added another with an RBI single bringing it to 14-11. An RBI double off the wall in right from Gabriel Rivera brought it 14-12 before the inning ended.
Chase Krewson followed Wells' homer in the ninth with a single. After being bunted over to second, a pair of flyouts would end the game.
Despite Sunday's loss, the Scarlet Knights head home with a series victory over the Nittany Lions.
Rutgers is back in action Tuesday at 6 p.m. for a midweek contest against St. John's at Bainton Field.
