PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers baseball split Friday's doubleheader with Ohio State, falling by a score of 8-0 in game one and winning the nightcap, 3-0.
The Scarlet Knights (21-22, 8-12) bounced back with their third shutout of the season to force a Sunday rubber match against the Buckeyes (21-20, 10-10).
Vincent Borghese, Jordan Saviñon and Joe Mazza combined for the shutout in game two, with Tristan Salinas hitting a home run to help lead the offense.
Game 1 Recap
The first game of the doubleheader was a pitcher's duel early, with the score tied at 0-0 heading into the fifth. OSU would rally to take a lead on an RBI single and two-run homer to make it 3-0.
A two-run single in the sixth and two-run homer in the seventh pushed the advantage to 7-0. A steal-and-stop in the ninth made it 8-0.
Offensively, Yomar Carreras collected a pair of hits, Jack Sweeney singled and Ryan Jaros singled and stole a base.
Game 2 Recap
Vincent Borghese provided the lift that Rutgers needed in game two, providing another strong start to lead RU to a shutout win. Borghese pitched five strong innings, giving up no runs with just four hits allowed and six strikeouts with no walks.
The Scarlet Knights would need just three runs to get the job done, jumpstarted by a Trey Wells RBI single in the fourth. Charlie Meglio added a sac fly later in the frame to push it to 2-0.
In the bottom of the fifth, Tristan Salinas launched a solo homer to bring it to 3-0.
After Borghese's day was done, Jordan Saviñon pitched a scoreless sixth and got the first two outs of the seventh. Joe Mazza came in with two on and two out in the seventh and got a groundout to end the frame.
Mazza would go on to throw scoreless eighth and ninth innings to earn his second save of the season.
The series finale and rubber match between Rutgers and Ohio State is set for noon Sunday at Bainton Field.
