Women's Soccer Drops Opener at No. 24 Tennessee

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Rutgers women's soccer dropped its 2026 season opener at No. 24 Tennessee by a score of 4-1 at Regal Soccer Stadium.
The Lady Vols (1-0) jumped ahead in the ninth minute and added on three more against the Scarlet Knights (0-1) to earn the victory.Emma Johns netted her first goal for RU late with 15 minutes left in the game, beating a pair of defenders and finishing in the bottom right corner of the net. While her tally made it a two-goal match, Tennessee would convert a penalty kick 10 minutes later to push the score to 4-1 and put the game away.
The Lady Vols took an early 1-0 advantage in the ninth minute when Kylee Simmons had a shot saved but followed up the rebound and slotted it home. Kai Tsakiris netted a second for Tennessee when she put home a loose ball after a free kick in the 32nd minute, giving the hosts a 2-0 halftime lead.
Just over 20 minutes into the second half, Simmons scored her second on a cross that made it through the box for her to slot home and make it 3-0. Johns' goal for RU came at the 75:46 mark in the second half, but it was not enough to mount a comeback. Tsakiris scored a second of her own on the PK to give Tennessee the 4-1 victory.
Olivia Bodmer made four saves in net, bringing her career total to 214, which sits ninth all-time in program history.
In total, 21 Scarlet Knights saw action, including four freshman debuts. Freshmen Lilia Calvert and Amanda Thornton both started in their first career game and Bea Tinoco and Tommi Rose Valente each made their collegiate debut. Additionally, Lily Ann Phillips made her Rutgers debut with the start in midfield.
Rutgers returns to action next Thursday on the road at UConn, with the match set for 7:30 p.m. in Storrs.
