Women's Soccer Battles to Draw at UConn
Aug 20 | Women's Soccer
STORRS, Conn. – Rutgers women's soccer fought to a 0-0 draw on Thursday night at UConn.
The Scarlet Knights (0-1-1) battled to earn multiple chances against the Huskies (0-0-2), but were unable to find a breakthrough.Olivia Bodmer stood tall in net for RU, making six crucial saves and earning her 22nd career shutout, a total that is now tied for sixth in program history. She also increased her career save total to 220, good for eighth all-time in Rutgers history.
On a rainy night in Storrs, offense was difficult to come by early. Bodmer made a crucial save on a fast break early in the contest and the Scarlet Knights settled in to control play in the final 15 minutes of the half.
In the second half, RU registered five shots and had five corner kicks, but the Huskies were up to the task on defense. True freshman Lilia Calvert had the best chance of the match in the final 10 minutes, finding space but having her shot in the lower-left corner turned away by the UConn keeper.
Ultimately, there were no goals to be had by either squad, with the teams settling for the 0-0 deadlock, the same result as last season's showdown in Piscataway.
True freshman Marian Dunne made her collegiate debut, collecting a pair of shots up top. Calvert put forth another strong effort, playing 88 minutes and tallying both of RU's shots on goal.
Rutgers returns to action on Sunday when it faces Fairfield at 2 p.m., the final of three straight road matches to open the season.
