FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Rutgers women's soccer battled to a 0-0 draw on Sunday afternoon at Fairfield to wrap up a three-game road trip to open the season.
The Scarlet Knights (0-1-2) held a 15-6 advantage in shots over the Stags (2-1-1), but could not capitalize on their chances in the attacking third.
Olivia Bodmer continued to climb the RU record books, registering her 23rd career shutout and moving into a tie for fifth all-time in Rutgers history. While she did not have a ton of work to do thanks to a strong defensive effort, she saved both shots on target she faced, including a sliding save on a fastbreak late in the second half to preserve the clean sheet.
The Scarlet Knights displayed a dangerous counterattack all afternoon, creating the bulk of the game's chances in transition. Reilly McGlinn created a pair of goal-scoring opportunities in the first half, finding Amanda Thornton in the box on a shot that went wide and nearly finding Marian Dunne at the back post for a goal soon after.
Lilia Calvert created a number of chances on her own, tallying four shots, including a pair in the second half from outside the box that nearly found the frame.
Head coach Mike O'Neill once again went nine-deep on the bench, with a wave of RU substitutions keeping the pressure on the Stags. Tommi Rose Valente came off the bench and nearly created a pair of chances in the second half, while Dunne also came off the bench and registered a pair of shots on target.
Rutgers now shifts its focus to the home opener, set for 7 p.m. Thursday against Boston College at Yurcak Field. Admission is free for all Rutgers women's soccer home games.
