Tennis Defeats Delaware on the Road, 6-1

Scarlet Knights improve to 3-0 on the season
NEWARK, DEL. – Rutgers tennis defeated Delaware by a score of 6-1 on the road Sunday afternoon. The Scarlet Knights secured the doubles point and five singles wins for the victory.
"It was a good, decisive win over a tough team," said head coach Hilary Ritchie. "We executed well when the sets were close. I am very proud of how they fought tonight."
Sophomore Jaci Cochrane and freshman Maya Jacobs picked up their second straight win in the No. 2 doubles position, topping Delaware's Sarah Hall and Amanda Studnicki by a score of 6-1. At the No. 1 spot, senior Mingxiu Du and sophomore Kat Muzik suffered their first setback as a duo this season, falling to the Blue Hens' Brooke Pilkington and Sara Komer, 6-2.
Senior Chloe Lee and freshman Isabelle Da Silva stayed strong in a tight match at the No. 3 spot against UD's Sarah Whited and Arielle Shuren, claiming a 7-5 victory and the a 1-0 edge for RU in the match.
Cochrane opened the singles matchups with a 6-2, 6-1 win at the No. 4 position over Delaware's Hall. Although UD countered with a win at the No. 1 spot next, Muzik earned a 6-1, 6-4 win in the No. 3 slot to extend RU's lead to 3-1.
Jacobs followed with a 6-4, 7-6 (5) win over her opponent at the No. 5 spot. Despite falling to Komer, 6-2, in her first set at the No. 2 position, Lee battled to win in the second, 7-6 (3), before winning the third-set tie break 10-3 for the win.
At the No. 6 spot, Da Silva set the final team margin at 6-1 with a victorious fight against Whited (2-6, 6-4, 7-5).
"It feels really good to be 3-0," said Lee. "All the matches we play in the beginning of the season are so important for setting the tone for our conference matches. I think it is really good that everyone is competing hard and executing early on. The team feels some solid momentum moving into our next matches."
Up next, Rutgers returns home to host Seton Hall on Saturday, Feb. 10. Match time is set for 6 p.m. ET at the East Brunswick Racquet Club.
