Baseball Picks Up 13-8 Win Over Lafayette

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers baseball picked up its second midweek win of the week on Wednesday, defeating Lafayette by a score of 13-8.

The Scarlet Knights (12-8) jumped up to a 5-0 lead in the second and continued the offensive barrage all afternoon to defeat the Leopards (3-17) handily.

Andy Axelson started things off with a bases-loaded single that scored a pair. Later in the inning, Maximus Martin recorded his first career hit, a 2-run home run to left field, scoring Axelson and giving RU a 4-0 lead. A sac fly from Cam Love in the inning would make it 5-0.

Another pair of runs crossed the plate for the Scarlet Knights in the third on a hard-hit grounder from Martin that was misplayed by the Lafayette second baseman.

The Leopards would get on the board with 3 runs in the fourth on a pair of doubles and an RBI groundout. Rutgers responded right away, scoring 3 runs of its own on an error and 2-run single by Chris Brito

The offense continued to produce in the fifth, with RU adding 3 more and making it 13-3 on a bases-loaded walk from Josh Kuroda-Grauer, a bases-loaded HBP by Evan Sleight and an error on a ball hit by Brito.

While Lafayette was able to post 5 more runs on the day, the cushion provided by the RU offense was plenty for the pitching staff.

John Modugno started the game on the mound and went 3.1 innings, allowing 3 runs on three hits with three strikeouts and a walk. Wyatt Parliament relieved him and tossed 1.2 scoreless frames.

Sam Portnoy also pitched effectively out of the bullpen, throwing 1.2 scoreless and hitless innings, adding a strikeout and picking up his first win of the season to move to 1-0.

Rutgers will now hit the road for the sixth straight weekend, traveling up to Connecticut to take on former Big East rival UConn in a three-game series, its final series before beginning Big Ten play.
