Track and Field Continues Record Breaking Season

Shamali Whittle is the latest to join the school record books

CHICAGO and CLEMSON, S.C. – The school-record breaking success for Rutgers track and field continued this weekend with two names etched on the all-time list. The Scarlet Knights sent sprints, distance and throws to Chicago for the Windy City Invite, while the jumps group traveled to Clemson, South Carolina for the Tiger Paw Invitational.

The Scarlet Knights have set school records in six events this season, four on the men's side and a pair on the women's squad.

Shamali Whittle became the latest school record holder, running a blistering time of 6.68 in the 60-meter dash. The time unseated Nadale Buntin who held the previous record of 6.72 which he set at the Big Ten Championships in 2023. Whittle also earned a second-place finish in the 200-meter, clocking 20.99.

Chris Serrao turned in the other record performance as he matched his previous all-time best time of 7.71 in the finals of the 60-meter hurdles, finishing third overall.

"We finished up our final tune up before the Big Ten Championships against some great competition," said Bobby Farrell, director of track & field and cross country. "I'm pleased with the way team got out there and competed. We had some great performances and we're looking forward to a weekend off so we can prepare for postseason in two weeks."

Bryce Tucker placed third in the 600-meter in 1:18.24, while Gabriel Rodriguez finished fourth in the 800-meter in 1:53.05, followed by Robert Poplau in fifth in 1:53.09. The mile saw Micah Lawson run a PR and finish third with a time of 4:09.39. Kyle Rakitis took fifth in the event, running 4:11.00.

On the women's side, Charlee Crawford ran a PR in the 200-meter, winning the event with a time of 23.82. She also finished third in the 400-meter, clocking 53.71. Shelby Whetstone placed fifth in the 800-meter invite section, running 2:06.80.

The Scarlet Knights will travel to Indianapolis for the 2025 Big Ten Championships held at the Indiana Farm Bureau Fall Creek Pavilion on Friday, February 28 and Saturday, March 1.
