Baseball Drops Rubber Match to Iowa

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers baseball dropped Sunday's series finale to Iowa by a score of 12-6 at Bainton Field. The Hawkeyes (7-7, 2-1) scored seven runs across the sixth and seventh to break away from the Scarlet Knights (6-9, 1-2) and win the series.
After the Hawkeyes loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the first, they struck first on a double play. They added an unearned run in the second to make it 2-0.
RU chipped away in the second to tie things up. Brennan Hyde singled into left to score one and JD Jones dropped down a perfect sacrifice bunt to add another and make it 2-2.
A two-run homer from Iowa made it 4-2 in the top of the third. The Scarlet Knights then rallied to take the lead in the fourth.
After two quick outs, Hyde and Jones both singled before RJ Johnson Jr. walked to load the bases. Trevor Cohen dropped a two-run single into center and Peyton Bonds followed with a two-run single of his own to make it 6-4.
A double steal by Iowa got back a run in the top of the fifth before the Hawkeyes broke out for four in the sixth.
A hit-by-pitch and walk put on a pair of Iowa to start the frame. A bunt single tied the game at 6-6 before a three-run homer made it 9-6. Another three-run homer in the top of the seventh would push the advantage to 12-6, which would hold as the final.
Rutgers returns to action at Penn on Tuesday afternoon at 3 p.m. in Philadelphia.
