Baseball Wins Series Finale Over Purdue

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Rutgers baseball won its series finale over Purdue by a score of 6-3 on Sunday afternoon at Alexander Field.
The Scarlet Knights (17-19, 6-9) used six runs in the first three innings to avoid a sweep to the Boilermakers (22-13, 5-10).
RU struck first with a two-out rally in the opening frame. Trevor Cohen lined a single up the middle, went to second on a passed ball and scored on an RBI single from Ty Doucette.
While Purdue evened it up in the bottom half, Rutgers took control of the game with a three-spot in the second. Matt Chatelle launched his second home run of the season to deep left field – a two-run shot to make it 3-1. Peyton Bonds then lifted a sac fly to right to score Pablo Santos and make it 4-1.
RU starter Justin Shadek settled in after the first inning and tied a career high with five innings. He gave up one run on two hits, while striking out a career-high seven batters.
Doucette led off the third with his team-best seventh home run of the season, giving the Scarlet Knights a 5-1 advantage. Later in the frame, Chatelle added another with a sac fly to push the advantage to a 6-1.
True freshman Luke Fithian came in to start the sixth inning on the mound and would go on to earn the 12-out save, he second straight weekend recording the feat. While the Boilermakers scored a pair on a two-out home run the eighth, Fithian limited the damage to just that to secure the RU victory.
