Baseball Beats Michigan State in Series Opener

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers baseball used a balanced effort to defeat Michigan State by a score of 9-4 in its Big Ten opener Friday at Bainton Field.
The Scarlet Knights (10-7, 1-0) used a strong offensive attack, and the pitching combination of Dallin Harrison and Vincent Borghese kept the Spartans (4-12, 0-4) off balance at the plate.
Harrison delivered his longest outing in a Rutgers uniform, going 5.2 innings. He allowed four runs, with just two of them earned, striking out five with five hits allowed. He exited the game with two outs in the sixth, turning the ball over to Borghese to close things out.
It marked the second straight week the two combined to pitch the full Friday night, doing the same in last Friday's 6-3 win over Bryant.
Borghese was once again stellar out of the bullpen, pitching a scoreless 3.2 innings to earn the save, allowing four hits and striking out four with no walks.
Offensively, RU got off to a quick start and scored a pair in the first thanks to an error and a fielder's choice.
After MSU tied things up in the top of the third, the Scarlet Knights plated four in the bottom half to take back control.
A sac fly from Trey Wells, RBI singles from Yomar Carreras and Matt Chatelle and a fielder's choice from Ryan Jaros each scored a run to make it 6-2.
Despite the Spartans adding a pair in the sixth to make it 6-4, a Chatelle single in the seventh and a two-run triple from Wells in the eighth made it 9-4.
Borghese then finished things off with a quick 1-2-3 ninth, giving Rutgers the series-opening victory.
Rutgers is back in action tomorrow against Michigan State, with first pitch set for 2 p.m. at Bainton Field. .
