Mar 25 | Men's Lacrosse
Sunday Game, A Scarlet Out, Begins at Noon on Big Ten Network
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Big Ten Conference play continues for No. 17/18 Rutgers men's lacrosse this weekend as the Scarlet Knights (7-3, 0-1) hosts No. 11/11 Johns Hopkins (6-2, 1-0). The game will start a stretch of four consecutive national TV broadcasts for RU on the Big Ten Network. Sunday's game starts at noon, with Mark Dixon and Joey Lindstrom on the call for BTN. Rutgers' student radio station, WRSU 88.7 FM, will have a radio broadcast of the game.
The game will be a Scarlet Out, with RU wearing its red jerseys and fans encouraged to wear red. Red Block R shirts, wristbands and shakers will be given out, while supplies last.
Rutgers, winners in six of the past eight games, fell just short of an upset win over No. 7 Ohio State last weekend in the Big Ten opener. The Scarlet Knights were unable to hold onto a 4-1 lead in a 6-5 overtime defeat. A stout defensive effort saw Cardin Stoller with a save percentage of 60% and forcing Ohio State into a season-high 20 turnovers.
RU's seven wins this season include three teams receiving votes in the Coaches Poll this week: LIU, Bellarmine, Jacksonville, as well as Villanova, who was a ranked team earlier this season.
Rutgers holds an RPI of 16 entering the week. That places RU as the fourth highest Big Ten team, with JHU first at 6. Rutgers' highest RPI win currently is Jacksonville, at No. 29, followed by LIU at 31. RU's losses have come to RPI No. 3, 12 and 13.
Offensively, RU is paced by Colin Kurdyla, who has 24 goals and 22 assists for 46 points. Kurdyla recently had a 20-point week against St. John's (4 G, 7 A) and Bellarmine (4 G, 5 A), making him the first player in program history with two games of 9+ points in the same season. He leads the Big Ten in assists per game (2.20) and points per game (4.60).
Goalkeeper Cardin Stoller is second in the Big Ten in save percentage (54.4%) and saves per game (9.90). He has allowed eight or fewer goals in six of the past seven games.
Rutgers has a top-10 scoring defense, allowing 9.0 goals per game. Connor Udovich leads the team with 1.8 caused turnovers per game, which is second in the Big Ten.
Rutgers has used 10 different starting lineups in nine games this season. The starting close defense and goalkeeper have been the same each game, with five different players starting on attack and seven different players starting on the first midfield.
Johns Hopkins enters the weekend at 6-2 overall and 1-0 in Big Ten play. The Blue Jays own wins over Robert Morris, Towson, Loyola, Virginia, Navy and Michigan, with lone losses coming to UNC and Syracuse, ranked fifth and seventh respectively in this week's Coaches Poll. Hopkins enters having won three of the past four having most recently outscored Michigan 14-8 last weekend.
Head coach Peter Milliman is 46-39 in his six seasons at the helm of the squad. JHU averages just 13.25 turnovers per game, best in the league and ninth nationally.
Offensively, Hopkins is led by Hunter Chauvette's 24 goals, the Big Ten's leader in goals per game. Matt Collison had 19 goals and nine assists for a team-high 28 points, while Chuck Rawson is at 14 goals and 11 assists.
The team has split action between two goalkeepers this season. Oran Gelinas (three starts, 254 minutes played) has a 9.67 goals-against-average and .549 save percentage. Dash Lamitie (five starts, 225 minutes played) holds a 10.38 goals-against-average and .480 save percentage.
Hopkins has had five players take at least 13 faceoffs this year. The primary FOGO has been Joe Hobot (60-of-108, 55.6%).
Johns Hopkins leads the all-time series 37-10 over RU. From 1965 through 2014 RU had just one win over Johns Hopkins (1990). Since the two squads joining the Big Ten in 2015, Hopkins' lead is a slim 7-6. Since 2021, Rutgers has won four of the past seven meetings with Johns Hopkins. RU has defeated a ranked JHU team four times since 2016.
Last season, the game was at Homewood Field in the Big Ten opener. Behind three goals from Haydn Sommer, RU came away with an 11-8 win over then-No. 11 Johns Hopkins. RU used a 6-2 margin after halftime for the victory. Cardin Stoller had 10 saves and a 55.6% save percentage in the game.
Rutgers is 3-2 against Johns Hopkins at SHI since joining the Big Ten, earning home wins in 2016, 2021 and 2022.
Rutgers is looking for its first ranked win of the season. A victory over No. 11 Johns Hopkins would also match last season's win total and be five wins in the last eight games against Johns Hopkins
After playing the first two Big Ten Conference games at home, RU is on the road for the next two games. Up next is at Michigan (April 5), then at No. 12 Maryland (April 11).
The game will be a Scarlet Out, with RU wearing its red jerseys and fans encouraged to wear red. Red Block R shirts, wristbands and shakers will be given out, while supplies last.
