PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers baseball dropped a 7-1 decision to No. 1 UCLA on Saturday afternoon in front of a capacity crowd of 1,308 at Bainton Field.
The Scarlet Knights (17-17, 5-9) went down early and were unable to mount a comeback against the top-ranked Bruins (32-2, 17-0), who clinched the series with the win.
UCLA got going with an RBI groundout in the first and a sac fly in the second to take a 2-0 advantage. The day after robbing a home run, Chase Krewson hit one of his own, a solo shot in the third inning. It was his third of the season to make it a one-run game at that point in the contest.
That was as close as the game would get, as a pair of home runs from the Bruins made it 5-1 in the fifth. A sac fly in the seventh and solo homer in the eighth pushed the advantage to 7-1.
Tyler Kane (1.1) and Jack Kirchner (1.0) both contributed scoreless outings of relief for RU on the day.
The series finale between Rutgers and No. 1 UCLA is set for 12 p.m. on Sunday afternoon.
