Women's Tennis Suffers First Loss of Season to UConn

ITHACA, N.Y. – Rutgers tennis suffered its first loss of the season to UConn by a score of 5-2 on Saturday, halting a four-game win streak for the Scarlet Knights. The Huskies claimed the doubles point and four out of six singles matchups for the victory.
"Today we really realized how much the little things matter," said Jaci Cochrane. "We'd had a pretty good lead in doubles and after a sudden change in momentum and a few errors on our part, it kind of slipped away from us. We definitely came away with a lot of things we can improve on moving forward, especially with Big Ten matches coming soon so that's definitely a positive. UConn is a tough team and we were right there."
In doubles play, UConn (5-3) edged out Rutgers (4-1) for a 1-0 advantage in the match. After Cochrane and freshman Maya Jacobs suffered their first loss of the season at the No. 2 spot, the remaining doubles pairs entered close battles on the court.
UConn's duo of Yelyzaveta Pletnyeva and Jacqueline Fitz-Randolph, however, claimed a slim 7-6 (3-0) victory over senior Mingxiu Du and sophomore Kat Muzik to take the point.
"After our tough loss of the doubles point, I would say the motivation to come back and try to dig out four singles points was what got me going in singles," said Cochrane.
Although the Huskies earned the first win in singles at the No. 5 spot to extend their advantage to 2-0, Cochrane shifted the momentum to RU with a strong win at the No. 4 spot. She topped her opponent 6-3, 6-2 for her fifth straight singles win of the season. Freshman Isabelle Da Silva followed with a victory at the No. 6 spot, cruising to a 6-0, 6-3 win to tie the match at 2-2.
Despite the surge, UConn would go on to claim the remaining three singles to hand Rutgers its first dual loss of the season. Up next, Rutgers continues its weekend with host Cornell on Sunday at 10:30 a.m. ET.
