No. 18 Men’s Lacrosse Heads to Stony Brook Saturday
Feb 11 | Men's Lacrosse
Game at 12 PM on SNY
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers heads to Long Island this Saturday for the team's second contest away from home. RU plays at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium in the first true road game of the season, facing Stony Brook at noon. Admission to this game is free.
The game will be televised on SNY in the local area, with a re-broadcast at 6 pm as well. The game will be streaming on Flo College.
Colin Kurdyla leads the team with seven goals through two games, scoring four against Jacksonville (which matched his career-high) and three against Army (his eighth career hat trick). Colin Zeller provides pop from midfield with four goals, second on the squad. Rutgers has scored 20 goals on the season, 14 of them unassisted.
Cardin Stoller backstops the team between the pipes, having been named this week to the Tewaaraton Award Watch List. The returning All-American and ECAC Defensive Player of the Year was one of five goalkeepers nationally recognized.
Dylan Groff was named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week this week, following his performance in a matchup against Hill Plunkett, the reigning Patriot League Player of the Week. The junior first year-starter at close defense is joined by Ben McKelvy (30 previous starts) and Connor Udovich (four previous starts) on the backline. Udovich leads the team with three caused turnovers, while Groff and Joe Juengerkes each have two.
John Scarelli has taken the majority of faceoffs for RU. He is 19-of-43 on the year.
Four Scarlet Knights earned Preseason All-American honors. Long-stick midfielder Ryan Splaine (Second Team), Cardin Stoller (Third Team), Joe Juengerkes (Third Team) and Colin Kurdyla were each named by multiple publications.
Men's lacrosse coaches across the nation this weekend will be wearing green ribbon "LG" lapel pins on the sidelines in memory of Siena head men's lacrosse coach Liam Gleason, who tragically passed away in December after just turning 41. Rutgers' head coach Brian Brecht previously also served as the head coach at Siena, and Gleason served as his assistant coach and defensive coordinator for three seasons in 2008-2010, which included an NCAA Tournament appearance in 2009.
Under seventh-year head coach Anthony Gilard, Stony Brook was 7-7 last season and is 20-25 overall since joining the CAA in 2023. Stony Brook was selected to finish fifth in the 2026 CAA Preseason Coaches' Poll.
The Seawolves opened on the road at Sacred Heart and fell, 16-11. Goalkeeper Tommy Wilk made 18 saves in the game as the Pioneers put up 57 shots. Kian McCoy, Tanner Williams and Collin Williamson all scored twice.
McCoy was named Preseason All-CAA alongside Robbie Smith. Both were Second Team all-league picks last year. McCoy had 15 goals and 18 assists as a freshman, and Smith won 60.4% of his faceoffs. SBU won just eight of the 30 faceoffs against Sacred Heart as Smith did not see action.
Rutgers and Stony Brook have previously met 16 times since 1994, with RU holding an 9-7 advantage. Rutgers has won four of the last six meetings and five of the past seven meetings. The teams will meet for the fifth straight season.
Last season, Stony Brook came to Piscataway for RU's third game of the season, winning 9-8. The Seawolves overcame a 7-4 deficit to outscore RU 5-1 in the final 29 minutes of the game despite three goals from Kasey Mongillo, two from Joe Juengerkes, and Ryan Splaine with four caused turnovers and four ground balls. It was Juengerkes' lone career multi-goal game.
Rutgers' leading scorer Colin Kurdyla scored his first collegiate goal against Stony Brook, a 16-12 win on Feb. 10, 2024.
Rutgers will return to Piscataway following this game for a three-game homestand. Up next is Villanova on February 21. The Wildcats entered the national polls this week, peaking at No. 14, after an overtime road victory over Penn State in their opener. RU also hosts LIU (Feb. 24) and Hofstra (Feb. 28) in a week span.
The game will be televised on SNY in the local area, with a re-broadcast at 6 pm as well. The game will be streaming on Flo College.
